Samsung's new line of Galaxy S20 flagships have a water resistance rating of IP68. This means you don't have to worry as much about getting the phones wet, but there's a limit to that.

The IEC standard 60529 outlines a series of tests performed by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. From these tests, devices like the S20 are then given an official IP rating based on how well they fare against exposure to water and dirt. As per the standard:

This standard describes a system for classifying the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment for two conditions: 1) the protection of persons against access to hazardous parts and protection of equipment against the ingress of solid foreign objects and 2) the ingress of water. The degree of protection against these two conditions is designated by an IP Code.

Though more commonly referred to as "Ingress Protection," the "IP" in IP Code is actually short for "International Protection Marking." It tells you how protected a smartphone is from water and debris. From here, the handset receives two numeric scores placed right next to "IP" to show their overall performance. The S20 line has been rated IP68, which means:

  • IP: Stands for "Ingress Protection," the rating system that measures a smartphone's level of protection against water and dirt.
  • 6: The first number denotes a device's resistance to dirt and debris. While seemingly low on the surface, the "6" rating is actually the highest score a device can get since it signifies complete protection from dirt and dust.
  • 8: The second number tells you how resistant a device is to water penetration. With an official score of "8," the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra can be completely submerged in water up to 1.5 meters deep — or just under 5 feet — for up to 30 minutes and emerge unscathed.

So whichever S20 model you go for, you can rest assured that your handset will have more than adequate protection from water and dirt. So accidental drops in the pool or tub or even being buried in sand aren't things to worry about.

But corrosive liquids such as saltwater, alcohol, chlorine, vinegar, acetone, and other impurities and chemicals aren't factored into the IP rating. These commonly found substances can damage the rubber seals and gaskets that protect your S20's internals from the elements, so you need to be extra careful with your S20 when around these substances.

Finally, you should know that Samsung will void your warranty if you get it water damaged. You can further protect yourself and your flagship by signing up to Samsung Premium Care, which is a monthly subscription plan that gives you up to three claims every 12 months, water damage included.
